Living with a Samsung Galaxy Note 10

It’s no surprise that Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10 is the most advanced Android phone currently on the market. I’ve been using one as my primary phone for the past few weeks and been impressed by the feel of the phone, the camera, and some of the new features that the S Pen stylus provides. The first thing you notice about the Note 10+ is the size. It is based on a 2.8 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 octa core processor with 12 GB of RAM, which may be overkill, but was very fast. Samsung removed the expansion microSD slot from the regular Note 10 in order to increase the battery size, but the Note 10+ still has one. You can add a 512GB card to get a full terabyte of storage. (Actually, the slot could theoretically support a 2TB card, but the largest currently on the market are 512GB.) My guess would be that this would be most useful for people who capture a lot of video; that 12GB of RAM is most helpful for editing said video.

The Note 10+ comes with Android 9 Pie with the Samsung One UI. Samsung’s Android skin has become lighter over the years, but it still comes with the company’s own Internet browser, Galaxy store, and a variety of Samsung specific applications, including Samsung’s own voice assistant called Bixby.

Of course, what makes the Note 10+ and the Note family as a whole unique is the included S Pen, the stylus the pops out of the bottom. As before you can use the S Pen to draw or write on the screen as with any stylus, including the ability to write quick notes on the screen even when locked.

By default, this will launch Bixby if you double press or press and hold the button, but you can customize this, so that double clicking will launch the camera or a specific app, and that pressing and holding will bring up a power off menu. (Otherwise, you press and hold the side key and power down or press a new power button on the top of the Notifications menu).

As an assistant, Bixby itself just doesn’t work as well as you would want. For instance, I asked it what time the presidential debate was scheduled for, and it told me the time of sunrise. It seemed to do a good job with voice recognition, though many times it just typed the question into Google and showed me the results. There’s a new Bixby marketplace that adds more skills, but in general, I’m not sure why you wouldn’t just use the Google Assistant, which you still can get to at the bottom of the screen or by asking, “OK Google.” performance has become one of the big differentiators in phone performance, and the Note 10+ is at the top of the class.

On the back, you’ll find three traditional cameras, similar to what is on the S10+. The main rear facing camera is a dual aperture 12 megapixel camera that can take shots with f/1.5 or f/2.4 aperture with a 77 degree field of view, which uses somewhat larger pixels. It also has a 12 megapixel “telephoto” (2X) lens with a 45 degree field of view (f.2/1). New to the Note family is a 16 megapixel ultrawide camera (f/2.2) with a 123 degree field of view.

Overall, as with the S10+, I was impressed by how the three cameras give you the ability to take a very wide range of photos:

In general, these seem very similar to the cameras on the S10+, but there are some important software differences.

Most notable is a new Night mode option on the main camera screen that takes a longer exposure in very low light situations if you can hold the camera very still. This doesn’t come up that often for me, but it can be quite useful. The Google Pixel line pioneered this concept, and it seems like Samsung is catching up. (Note this wasn’t on the S10+ originally, but Samsung says it has now been pushed to that device as well.) I found that in very dark situations it really makes a huge difference.

The rear of the camera also has a flash and the Note 10+ adds a VGA depth sensor (also known as a time of flight sensor). This system, which Samsung calls DepthVision, takes up two smaller holes on the back of the device.

This enables some new features. One is a separate app known as Quick Measure that you download from the Galaxy Store and enables you to use your camera to measure the distance between different points of an object to measure it. It takes a little getting used to, but I can see where this might come in handy.

Another is a 3D scanner app that lets you capture an object in 3D, save it as a GIF, and then add it to other photos or coque iphone 7 a 3 videos. This is designed to work with items that are 20 to 80 cm tall, and I found it worked best if I put the object on a tall table that I could circle around easily, and even then I wouldn’t say my results were all that good, though they probably would improve with practice.
